Hello Friends and Family of Westlake Charter School!
It's time for our
2nd Annual WCS Olympic Triathlon, an exciting fundraiser carried out by our students.
On October 30, 2009, WCS students will be extremely active - displaying skills learned in their specialty classes of Spanish,
Art and P.E. The Triathlon includes the following events:
- Spanish Language Game
- Art Project for the Campus
- Obstacle Course
The Need
The economy has taken a terrible toll on education in California. To deal
with this budget crisis, most public schools have laid off teachers, slashed
programs, and increased class sizes - all to the detriment of the children's
education. Westlake Charter is a
charter public school, meaning we
manage our own budget independently from Natomas Unified School District
and have not yet implemented such dire measures. However, as a
charter
school, we have the added expenses of providing specialty classes to our
exceptional curriculum, as well as small class sizes and additional teacher
aides. Currently, our funds are being squeezed to the point that our WCS
Board will consider increasing class sizes and reducing our specialty classes
in order to keep us financially healthy. This would send our children backwards!
The Kids' Request
Our students are proud to announce that our STAR Testing API
scores are the highest in the district this year! They are thriving with
the quality of learning provided in their regular and specialty classes,
especially with the personal assistance a small class affords and teacher
aids. The positive atmosphere of our school is a boost to self-confidence.
They certainly do not want their school to go backwards and they are willing
to work hard during the Olympic Triathlon to ensure that their exceptional
education continues, especially within these challenging times.
