There are a lot of questions regarding what counts and what doesn’t towards your family’s 30 hours. We’re working on putting the guidelines in writing; In the meantime, here are some pointers:
The 30 hours is per family. Parents, grandparents, and other adult family members or guardians can contribute. It is 30 hours total, regardless of how many children you have attending the school.
If your activity contributes toward the betterment of the school as a whole (or a class), it counts toward your volunteer hours. If it is work for your own child or family, it does not count toward your hours. Things that count: purchasing or hand-making supplies or food items for a class, teachers, or school function; attending W.A.V.E. meetings and committee meetings; emailing, researching, phoning, etc. for a committee; helping to plan and carry out an event for a class or the school; using your skills and contacts to help the school progress, and so much more! If in doubt, JUST ASK!
Hours are counted in 30-minute increments.
Note that if you don’t sign out at the school, you are given only 30 minutes credit.
It is important to continue tracking your hours even after you reach 30 because the TOTAL number of parent hours is used for large grant writing applications.
Sherri Sanders, one of our wonderful Westlake parents, keeps the log of our volunteer hours. If your volunteer work is done at the school, sign in/out in the school office. Sherri picks up the volunteer sign in/out sheets weekly. If you attend a school-related meeting, be sure to sign in at the meeting. The attendance sheet is given to Sherri. If you do work on your own, you can submit your hours by email at wcs_vol_hrs@yahoo.com, or submit a document to the school office (place in the Parent Group Inbox) for Sherri including the following: Activity/Donation (describe), Date(s), For Whom, Number of Hours.
